vacant; and

at Hong Kong, which I am told, is now

being done, I ought, perhaps, to mention that I was unsuccessful in

my

former Applications which I made for the Chief Justiceship of Ceylon, in November

1855; & again, in December last; & for the

Chief Justiceship at the Cape, in January 1856; but that I have the satisfaction of knowing that on each of those occasions, a gentleman slightly qualified & by several years my senior at the Bar, obtained
